Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take for a finger fusion to heal?

It usually takes four to six weeks for the ends of the bones to heal and form a solid fusion.

What can I expect after finger fusion surgery?

It is normal to have mild bruising, swelling and pain in the surgical area after the surgery. Most surgeries require a cast for several weeks to stabilize the hand.

What is joint fusion surgery?

Such procedures, also called arthrodesis, are generally used for the treatment of fingers that cause constant pain as a result of instability. During the surgical procedure, the cartilage causing the deformity is removed, the bone ends are cut, and the two bone ends are fused into a single solid bone by metal internal fixation. As a result, the disease causing the pain is permanently treated.

Can you get arthritis in a fused joint?

It is not a recommended solution for every arthritis problem. However, in cases of severe and long-lasting arthritis pain that does not respond to other treatments, joint fusion surgery (arthrodesis) may be recommended.
