DIABETES SURGERY

Type II Diabetes is one of the common social health problems of our age. Type II diabetes patients have to be on medication, insulin supplementation, do diet and exercise throughout their whole life but regular permanent treatment reduces patients’ quality of life. In recent years, surgical solutions have started to gain importance in Type II diabetes patients whose conditions are suitable for surgery.

Why is Metabolic Surgery recommended?

When it comes to type 2 diabetes, metabolic surgery is the most definitive method with proven effectiveness to date. Although the priority in the treatment of type 2 diabetes is to control the patient's lifestyle, sometimes the blood sugar level cannot be kept at the desired level. In such patients, if the patient's suitability for the operations is determined, the most precise method that can be applied is metabolic surgery. Apart from diabetes, this method is also very effective in diseases caused by metabolic syndrome.

How is Type 2 Diabetes Surgery Performed?

These surgeries are completely closed operations which are performed with the help of a telescope through millimetric holes.

Laparoscopic (closed) method is a procedure  that concerns the stomach and intestines. In all methods  used today in diabetes surgery, the last part of the small intestine is brought closer to the stomach to ensure that the food meets the stomach earlier. Thank to this, the insulin-related hormones in the last part of the small intestine are activated, the insulin in the body starts being used and the amount of glucose in the blood begins to decrease. Thus, there is no need for  insulin supplementation from the outside.

Who can have diabetes surgery?

• those who have been diagnosed with diabetes for less than 10 years,

• those with a BMI of 30 and above,

• diabetics whose insulin reserve adequacy has been proven by laboratory tests.

Can this surgery also be applied to type 1 diabetes patients?

Unfortunately, this surgery cannot be performed on type 1 diabetes patients. As type 1 diabetic patient group has  no insulin reserve in the pancreas in this surgery is applied solely to the type 2 patient group.

How long is the hospital stay after metabolic surgery?

Our patients stay in the hospital for 4 or 5 nights. On the evening of the operation, the patient is most of the time even able to get up and walk around.

Is diabetes surgery a definitive solution to diabetes?

While the success rate with sleeve gastrectomy surgery is 65% in type 2 diabetes patients selected suitable for surgical treatment", this rate reaches 95% in the group of patients who underwent Loop and Transit Bipartition Surgery (an operation performed in addition to gastric sleeve surgery).
